OpenHIE Virtual Engagement Opportunities

This year has been historic and distinct in countless ways. While there have been many challenges, this new normal has also presented opportunities. The pandemic has allowed us to reflect on how far we’ve come, where we would like to go next, and explore ways to innovate and bring the community together in different ways.

No single virtual event

We will not have a full virtual event that mirrors the face to face Community Meeting that was set for Malawi later this year [see postponement message]. Instead we will offer different opportunities to virtually engage between now and the Malawi 2021 event. Below is a list of opportunities to stay up to date on new tools and happenings being developed by members of our community, ways to share the work you are doing and virtual events to solicit input and share your experience.

1. Implementers Network Calls

OpenHIE Implementers Network (OHIN) calls take place the 4th Monday of each month from 10:00 - 11:00 AM Eastern Time. Calls allow community members to share implementation experiences and serve as a showcase for tools and activities related to OpenHIE that the community can benefit from.

This month members from the BID Initiative will share work in Tanzania around HIE to improve immunizations. Please join our call on Monday, September 28th to learn more about their experiences and take the opportunity to ask questions. Details on how and when to join can be found here.

Also if you have something you would like to showcase or share with the community post to our community forum under the Implementers Network (OHIN) category.

2. Architecture Community Virtual Summit

This virtual event will be a multi-day workshop hosted in February 2021 to take a deeper dive into OpenHIE’s architecture and where we are headed. Details will come out on our website - https://ohie.org.

In the meantime the Architecture community holds calls every second Monday and last Friday of the month from 10:00 - 11:00 AM Eastern Time. Details on how and when to join can be found here.

3. OpenHIE Academy

A new online learning platform will be launched later this year for the OpenHIE Academy. The aim of this online platform will be to provide self-paced instant access learning to people interested in HIE and OpenHIE. The initial six FREE courses planned to be launched within the next 12 months are designed to increase support for better HIE architecture and process. Courses include:

  • Intro to HIE and OpenHIE
  • Overview of the OpenHIE Architecture
  • Overview Registries and Workflows
  • Terminologies and Data Standards for HIE
  • HIE and Leadership Course
  • Interoperability Course

More specifics will be announced closer to launch. In the meantime if you would like to be involved with Academy planning, calls occur every second Wednesday of the month from 9:30 - 10:30 AM Eastern Time. You can find details on how to join here.

4. Blog Posts

We invite you to reach out to us via email support@ohie.org if you are interested in sharing your work or experiences with the OpenHIE community through a blog post. Topics could include but are in no way limited to:

  • Your experience using an OpenHIE community tool
  • Your experience engaging with the OpenHIE community overall
  • How your view of HIE has changed since becoming involved with OpenHIE
  • Share things you’ve learned and how you’ve used them
  • Highlighting a technical software or approach
  • Discuss your thoughts on an emerging issue
  • Anything else you would like to share with the broader community!

5. Success Stories and Works in Progress

In addition to having the opportunity to present a success story or work in progress on the OHIN calls, we are currently revamping the OpenHIE web presence. On our new site we will have a place to showcase success stories and works in progress. Please fill out the survey at this link for an opportunity to be featured on the OpenHIE website.

As details around virtual offerings are finalized, updates will be sent via our community platform Discourse and Twitter.

Further updates related to Malawi 2021 will be found on our website at https://ohie.org/meetings as they become available.
