IHE Connectathon Project (update)

Hi all.

For all our US colleagues: happy thanksgiving, and I hope you are enjoying the turkey leftovers (open face turkey sandwiches and gravy… mmmm…).

This is just a quick update regarding the IHE training session that Ryan and Hannes (of Jembi) attended at Mohawk College last week. The highlights are:

· The training went well and was a success. Both Ryan and Hannes were able to get their arms around the IHE’s CT, ATNA, PIX and XDS profiles. Programming work was done on a branch of the health information mediator (HIM) to support these profiles and we are “there” or “nearly there” on all of them. Kudos to Ryan and Hannes for being such quick learners.

· It was clear, by last Friday, that our inbound HL7v2 messages (from OpenMRS to the HIM) do not contain the datasets necessary for us to successfully support the IHE’s Antepartum Summary (APS) or Emergency Department Referral (EDR) content profiles. The HIM does not receive the inbound data needed to create conformant CDA documents. Instead, our plan is to send our existing HL7v2 ORU R01 messages using the XDS profile. This is perfectly valid and we will obtain our XDS certification – but not our APS or EDR certifications. This shouldn’t prevent us from participating in the showcase; it will, however, likely mean we’re demo’ing “on our own” as there will not be others there who are using the same message sets as we are. That’s ok, and is what we wanted to do, anyway, so we can show off our “low resource setting” workflows.

· We have an assurance from Mohawk that they are able to support us as we continue our preparations for the Connectathon & Showcase provided that we can prepare a project plan that shows where Mohawk will be needed. Ryan and Hannes will be preparing this. It is a high priority item as support from Mohawk will help us mitigate our resource capacity risk at Jembi.

· Mohawk will continue to provide remote access to the development test bed that Ryan and Hannes have been using for the last week. Connectivity to these IHE servers and services was tested and confirmed before the guys left the college on Friday.

There was a lot of learning curve regarding IHE. Both Ryan and Hannes are at (or close to) the “aha” moment when it all clears up and starts to make sense. We will look for ways to leverage this beachhead for others that will be doing IHE work in the coming months. Interestingly, one of the projects Mohawk has on its plate is to develop training materials (IHE for Dummies?) specifically to help address this issue. We may be able to collaborate with them on these materials.

If you have questions, please ping me with them.

Warmest regards,

Derek.

Hi All!

Now that we seem to have a more complete members list for the OpenHIE Announcements group I would like to resend an email announcement Derek Ritz sent out last week. It is an update on the IHE Connectathon Project and were we are at for the IHE Connectathon in January.

Thanks,

Jamie
