i found a document, quite by accident, while i was searching for another one. it is a quite fulsome design of an overall HIE architecture based on IHE profiles. the design was developed as part of the EU’s patient data sharing initiative: epSOS.

it really is VERY good.

Wow, that’s quite a coincidence! We just had someone from the epSOS project in our offices here this week that gave us a very comprehensive presentation around the project.
I’ve actually been looking further into the project myself in the last day or so, they’re software is open source (called OpenNCP).

It’s really a very interesting project, and I suspect there’s a lot we can learn by investigating further.
