OpenHIM and OpenSHR communities - Would you like to participate?

**Welcome to the OpenHIM and OpenSHR community **

The OpenHIM and OpenSHR are two projects which fall under the auspices of the OpenHIE initiative.

The Open Health Information Mediator project aims to enables easier interoperability between Health Information Systems, while the Open Shared Health Record projects aims to enable the collection and storage of electronic health information about individual patients capable of being shared across different healthcare settings.

The OpenSHR project aims to review existing and proposed solutions to fulfill the role of a shared health record for the HIE. This project will focus on a technology review based on the combined gathering of expectations and requirements of the SHR (driven by in country requirements).

Key activities of this initial phase are to perform a critical review of the architecture and technologies used in the development of the RHEA implementation of these HIE components, as well as a comprehensive review of alternatives, to ensure due diligence.

1. OpenHIM and OpenSHR Community Calls

To this end, we would like to initiate a one hour fortnightly conference call to discuss different approaches and paradigms, as well as elaborate the generic requirements. We will begin by outlining our proposed strategy and highlight key questions so initially will combine both the OpenHIM and OpenSHR discussions, but these will develop into separate groups as work progresses.

Please also forward this email to anyone who you think may be interested in joining this discussion, or alternatively you can send me their email address and I will contact them.

Proposed call times are:

Mondays 3 - 4pm CAT / 8-9 am EST or 4-5pm CAT / 9-10 am EST

Tuesdays 4 - 5 pm CAT / 9-10 am EST

Fridays 3 -4 pm CAT / 8-9 am EST

If you are interested in participating, please indicate your choice of call times in this Doodle poll:

2. Collaborative workspace

See http://openhim.org for more details.

There are two Github repositories and wikis for these projects: the wiki spaces are intended as open collaborative work spaces for all interested parties to add to this work.

OpenHIM : https://github.com/jembi/openhim/wiki

mailing list: openhim-dev@googlegroups.com

OpenSHR: https://github.com/jembi/OpenSHR/wiki

mailing list: openhie-shr@googlegroups.com

All contributions to the wiki are very welcome.

If you have any queries or comments, please let me know.

Best regards

This is great… thanks for setting up these mailing lists, looking forward to the conversations!

The only thing I’d be sensitive to at this point, Linda: these are conversations around the “interoperability layer” and the “shared health record”. OpenHIM is a technology that serves as the interoperability layer for Rwanda’s early work. Same with OpenMRS. The whole thrust of the next few months is to decide whether we are going to work with these technologies in a big way going forward, or whether we’re going to take some new directions.

So, I’d name the lists a little more generically, if there’s a chance to do this.

Hi Paul

That’s an important point likely to cause confusion and something we overlooked - will look into alternative names.
