Lets propose some projects for Google Summer of Code?

Hi everyone,

As you may know, OpenMRS plans to participate in the GSoC 2016 program.

As a downstream project of OpenMRS, OpenHIE can also propose and work on OpenMRS related projects with students.

We have already done this before; in 2014, Ryan C and Hannes mentored Sara Fatima on the IHE Patient administration management project which helped OpenMRS to easily integrate with an HIE.

Would we like to identify and propose suitable projects for students to work on as part of GSoC? we have plenty of time to do this, as the event doesn’t happen until the summer…

···

Best Regards,
Suranga

How about OpenMRS user synchronization against a Health Worker Registry?
Cheers,
-carl

Love that one, Carl!

Can we have more than one? If yes, can I suggest creating an outbound CDA (using our OpenHIE “CCD+” format) that contains the encounter info and posting it to the HIE’s SHR. If we feel especially motivated we could also do the flipside… retrieving the ODD CDA from the SHR and saving it to OpenMRS as discrete data. That 2nd one will be helped by the code we have for the OpenSHR which basically does this, now.

Hi there,

@Carl, excellent! :slight_smile:

@Derek,

Yes, we can have more than one. However, note that these will be students who will need some hand holding / mentoring - but not a whole lot, because we only pick the best :wink:

@hannes and @ryan C. are GSoC experts, and may also be able to help…

Does anyone else have any suggestions to put forward? perhaps we should find some time on an upcoming call to discuss and scope out the work etc.

Hi Suranga

As the whole concept of patient centric HIEs requires the need to identify the patient where do we stand with a Patient registration module? It may be an Idea to get that dusted off or built?

Hi Carl,

When you say patient registration module, what functionality are you talking about?

Does what you have in mind match with this module: https://wiki.openmrs.org/display/projects/Integrate+Registration+Module+with+a+Master+Patient+Index

If not, then yes, we could plan for something :slight_smile:

Hi all,

Just wrapped up an OpenMRS dev call where we discussed the possibility of having a Google Summer of Code student work on packaging up OCL dictionary exports in the familiar SQL scripts that Andy and CIEL currently provides. This would be a big step in allowing CIEL to move towards managing its dictionary directly on OCL, instead of having to manage it in two locations like it currently does. It’s a very encapsulated project that lends itself to a short-term contributor, as it wouldn’t require deep dives into the OCL codebase or API.

If this seems like a good fit, I’m happy to write this up further.

Thanks!
Jon

Hi Jonathan,

This is a great idea, and we’d love to pursue it further. Could you please spend some time writing up a project description page, following the general template that you see here: https://wiki.openmrs.org/display/projects/Consuming+FHIR+Resources+for+OpenMRS

Question though - doesnt this project fall under the general OpenMRS umbrella? Are you posting here (OpenHIE) because you think that OpenHIE has a specific need for it? :slight_smile:

Thanks!
Jon

Hi Carl,

When you say patient registration module, what functionality are you talking about?

Does what you have in mind match with this module: https://wiki.openmrs.org/display/projects/Integrate+Registration+Module+with+a+Master+Patient+Index

If not, then yes, we could plan for something :slight_smile:

Hi Suranga

As the whole concept of patient centric HIEs requires the need to identify the patient where do we stand with a Patient registration module? It may be an Idea to get that dusted off or built?

Hi there,

@Carl, excellent! :slight_smile:

@Derek,

Suranga

Hi All,

I have a very rough draft a project here:

https://wiki.openmrs.org/display/~litlfred/Synchronizing+OpenMRS+with+a+Health+Worker+Registry

I’ll work a bit more on it over the next couple of days (not sure what the due-date/timeline is) but would appreciate any initial feedback.
Cheers,
