GeoNode?

Hi All,

I am curious if anyone has used GeoNode:

https://github.com/GeoNode/geonode

in the health context?

Cheers,

-carl

Hi Carl,

I worked with GeoNode to serve up spatial data in support of the PEPFAR program. Our primary objective was to set up a platform to share standardized data within the USG interagency, including files that were not yet cleared for public release. Our long game included a plan to use it to publish some data publicly. GeoNode can sync with Data.gov, which is great. However, our instance of GeoNode broke and we were unable to get it up and running again on our own. Folks in my office also helped set up the Ebola GeoNode: http://ebolageonode.org/. For PEPFAR, we’re currently using ArcGIS Online to store and share shapefiles and services. Happy to discuss further.

Best,
Nate

Hi Nate,

Thanks for sharing this. Setting the aside the broken instance, it sounds like GeoNode has good potential for use. Perhaps as a server for administrative hierarchy and boundary data. Were you unable to resolve the issues due to technical deficiencies in the software or was it more a lack of documentation?

For the PEPFAR work, was that related to DATIM?

Cheers,

Hi Carl,

GeoNode has a lot of potential. It has an active developer community and keeps getting better. We attempted to move from a fork to the parent branch and ran into trouble, so our issues were at least partially self-inflicted. There were bugs we couldn’t address and import scripts that didn’t work as expected.

We used GeoNode to store and share shapefiles we adapted for DATIM. Spatial data we use in DHIS2 (gml) originates in simplified subnational shapfiles we’ve aligned to State Department international boundaries. GeoNode allows you to upload zipped shapefiles and easily download the same data as gml or geojson so it was super convenient. We currently use QGIS to make these file format conversions.

Best,
Nate

FYI: the DHIS2 administrative boundaries (for DATIM and elsewhere) are captured in the InterLinked Registry as a GML in the CSD standard as an extension. I don’t think DHIS2 was strictly adherent to gml - I needed to do a bit of data massaging.

The updated mCSD standard, based on HL7 FHIR, is out for public comment. There is an open question about how to represent administrative boundaries:
